Day Sixty Two: Birthday Wishes and Busy Hands

My Mom's sewing basket.

Before I begin, I'd like to wish my sister Liza a happy birthday!

A few weeks ago, I found my Mom's sewing basket. It now sits on top of my work table at home. Every so often, I look at the contents: zippers salvaged from various old clothes, a worn and politically incorrect pin cushion (I'll leave that one up to your imagination), trimmings, elastic bands, and some plastic tools that I cannot identify. I'll pick up something, look at it, and put it back exactly as I found it. Every time I do this, I get an idea or feel inspired to play around with some of the materials in my work space.

The last couple of days have been busy ones for me. I've been sewing--or at least trying to sew--like a mad woman. While I can't show the finished pieces because I'm submitting them for different proposals, here are some shots of the works in progress:

In the past, I've embroidered brown paper rather than used a sewing machine, so this is all new. I don't know if I'm any good at it, but I have a lot of brown bags at my disposal. I finished this little clutch purse with a map of my old neighborhood on it:

Yikes...

It still could use a little something. Right now, it's too abstract a design for anyone to see and have that "a-ha!" moment. I even have a hard time getting excited about it.

I'm glad her sewing basket is with me. It feels right, as if my Mom wanted me to have it. She truly was my source of inspiration when she was alive, and I'd like to think that she still is.
